First aid training is required for those who are in the healthcare industry. It teaches students how to act in emergency situations in a way that complies with the Australian Resuscitation Council’s standards. If you’re thinking of getting professional training in this field, here are a few things that should help.
What course do you prefer?
There are two courses to choose from:
• HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – This course teaches students how to perform basic CPR. The guidelines are all set by the Australian Resuscitation Council. It also teaches students how to perform basic life support whilst waiting for an ambulance. Other lessons include:
o The legalities of performing CPR
o How to use a defibrillator
o How to debrief the patients and their companions after the emergency
• HLTAID003 Provide First Aid – The Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation is a prerequisite for this course. This program teaches students how to:
o Assess the legalities of an emergency situation before acting
o Perform basic life support
o Perform CPR
o Use a defibrillator
o Check and treat abdominal injuries
o Treat allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis
o Treat wounds, burns, scalds, crush injuries
o Provide immediate response to those with musculoskeletal injuries such as strains, sprains, dislocations, fractures
o Give immediate care for those who have been poisoned or injected with venom
o Carry out immediate treatment for those who have injuries from the elements such as frostbite or heatstroke
This is just a partial list of what students can expect from this course.
What are the requirements?
Immediate care requires students to be physically capable. During CPR, they must continue to provide resuscitation for a full two minutes. This is why it’s highly recommended that those who take these courses be healthy.
Those who are under the age of 18 can still take the course – there is no age limit to safety. However, they are required to provide a consent form signed by their parent or guardian. Candidates can take the courses on-site. Whilst there is an option to complete it online, a test with a CPR dummy is required to complete the course.
